Internet makes it easy to find a new horse. Owners, horse dealers and breeders offer dressage horses for all classes, jump and hobby horses on pages and pages in the internet. No reason to get encompassed locally, or personally browse through Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein. But thinking like this soon proves this is a mistake.

“Finding the suitable horse for the matching rider is not as easy as it seems,” notes the director of Pferdesport Wintermühle GmbH, Arnold Winter. “A horse that looks good to the rider is not necessarily the most fitting for him. What about his demands – in the future, riding skills, and level of training respectively the horse’s assets?”

Before buying a horse ask the following questions:
-What kind of a horse am I looking for?
-Where am I currently?
-What do I want to achieve riding wise?
-Does budget and job fit?

“Once these questions have been answered sincerely, a suitable horse can be found”, said Winter, who has been dealing with this for more than twenty years and knows how difficult it is to find the optimal horse. “We always have about 60 dressage horses of all ages and training levels here at Wintermühle that we market on behalf of clients. All of the horses are fully broken in and exercised, so that we know our horses very well. And yet, not all L-horses are equal - rideability, training level of the horse and rider plus likeability and outer appearance have to be compatible, in order to guarantee a reliable purchase. Therefore you should never rush into buying a horse, instead take your time testing the one or the other horse” advises the specialist.
